Jerry Lawler is arguably the most notable figure in Memphis wrestling history, but his presence as a fixture on the national scene began in late 1992. Lawler made his then-WWF commentary debut on the December 12, 1992 episode of WWF Superstars, joining Vince McMahon and “Macho Man” Randy Savage on commentary.

Lawler would serve as a smarmy heel for most of the 1990s, engaging in a memorable feud with promotional stalwart Bret “The Hitman” Hart over the next several years. Sporadic in-ring appearances followed over the next two decades, including notable bouts against The Miz and fellow commentator Michael Cole.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider noted on May 6 that “WWE quietly declined to renew Lawler’s broadcast contract.” The article goes on to state that sources confirmed Lawler remains under a “Legends” contact, however.

Lawler, who turns 75 in November, made his professional wrestling debut in 1970, making him one of the few wrestlers to participate, in some capacity, within the industry across six decades. If this marks the end of the “king’s” tenure in the world’s largest pro wrestling outfit, it serves as yet another sign of major changes within the Stamford, Connecticut based promotion.
